British cable on Prince Dhani, 1951

Here’s a confidential March 1951 cable from British chargé d’affaires Richard Whittington on Prince Dhani Niwat, an uncle of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was appointed regent after the death of Prince Rangsit of Chainat.

The cable describes Dhani as an “ardent Royalist” who loathed the prime minister, Field Marshal Phibul Songkram, but believed in the necessity of working with him to neutralise exiled former Senior Statesman Pridi Banomyong, “whom he regards as a radical and an anti-monarchist”.
